How not to be a (prison) parent

After weeks of refining, this morning I sent the final version of my book on abuse and neglect in child prisons to the publishers. Phew. It’s been a frustrating time to have to have my head down, as there’s lots I wanted to comment on – Kids Company’s new campaign See the Child, Change the System; the legislation to build massive child prisons which started its Lords scrutiny last week; tribunal preparations to try and get full disclosure of the manual governing the new system of restraint in child prisons; privatising child protection; and, over the last couple of days, pressure for an overarching child abuse inquiry. But the topic I feel compelled to start with is the Secretary of State for Justice’s announcement that child prisoners will be sanctioned for having a light on or watching TV after 10.30pm. No Newsnight for them!
