The Gaveliers called it an Extravaganza. This was an opportunity for my Wednesday night Gavel Club to showcase their speaking skills for their fellow inmates, their family and their friends. The Gaveliers wrote the entire program and scripted all the roles; I could not have been more proud.
The chapel was filled with so many inmates the guards had to bring in extra chairs. Families came from far away towns and nearby states to see their son/brother/cousin/father hold court (so to speak) with an impressive array of speeches and skits to show that even though they are in prison, the Gaveliers are being productive and learning skills that will help them once they are released from prison.
When special events such as this are held, special treats are allowed to be brought into the prison. Everything must be sealed and no “exotic foods” such as pizza, fried chicken or ice cream are…
